When Mad Men returned to the air waves (and all those second and third screens) last year, nearly 18 months had elapsed since the previous season. Die-hard fans like me barely survived the overlong wait. When the premiere date for season five was finally announced, I decided to celebrate with a month-long blog event. Sunday Night is Mad Men Night was a joint effort with four blogger friends who each assessed the award-winning series from a different point of view:
FlickChick, of A Person in the Dark, contemplated past versus present through the authentic period detail the series is famed for with Mad Men: Now and Then and Back Again.
Whistlingypsy, whose blog is Distant Voices and Flickering Shadows, took a thoughtful look at the series via some of its key female characters in The Feminine Mystique of Mad Men.
Christian Esquevin, author of Adrian: Silver Screen to Custom Label and the blog Silver Screen Modiste, reflected on the series through its iconic Mad Men Style.
Motorcycle Boy, a contributor to The Lady Eve’s Reel Life, gazed into Mad Men: Through a Glass Darkly, linking the series narrative and its themes to the roots of addiction.
My own piece was a wide-ranging Meditation on Mad Men.
And now that Mad Men 6 is about to begin it is perhaps a good time to look back at where season five ended...and consider where the new season may take us.

I'm so excited for more Mad Men!!
ReplyDeleteJust 48 hours 'til we find out - or at least get a clue - what Matt Weiner has in store for us this season.
DeleteLady Eve - It seems like this wait has been as torturous as the last one. But thanks for getting us pumped up again. I forecast a great late-60s fashion splash in the new series. And who knows what plot twists. We shall see.
ReplyDeleteChristian - Style-wise, what strikes me so far in promo clips and photos is Megan's appearance. Her look (particularly hair, makeup, earrings) brings to mind the ladies in "Valley of the Dolls." Also interesting, Pete's sideburns. Wondering if we'll see Nehru jackets and love beads...
DeleteLast season I felt that Don Draper was living in somewhat of a fool's paradise with Megan, so it will be interesting to see how much of his conflicted past returns this season (with a surprising twist, I assume). Little Sally Draper growing in leaps and bounds will probably set some things in motion, but one can only guess and anticipate. Megan looks rather tacky in the above picture - in a Jacqueline Suzann kind of way.
ReplyDeleteWell, I for one am hoping Don departs his fool's paradise early on this season - but I'm sure we'll see many twists and turns as the characters and storyline of Mad Men proceed to the end of the 1960s.
DeleteThat is so groovy!! I'm really looking forward to watching, Mad Men!!
ReplyDeleteThe "games begin" tomorrow night, so glad you'll be watching, Dawn!
Deletegreat articles, and I'm so excited! Waiting this long for Mad Men has already become a tradition. It's really close now!
ReplyDeleteThank you, Sofia. You're right, the wait has become traditional (and I still don't like it) - just a few hours to go now.
DeleteTonight! Tonight! I'll see Don Draper tonight!!!! I hope that Betty gets some sort of story line this season.
ReplyDelete...and it "won't be just any night" either. In the season 6 promo pix, etc., Betty looks like the Betty we knew before and is prominently featured. Hopefully, this means there'll be more Betty this time out.
