I'm surprised that the otherwise perceptive Cahiers du Cinema and Truffaut did not see the evident greatness of his films, particularly the neo-noir Le Jour se Leve. In any event it is much valued today. And as you justly point out, Gabin remained the ever-popular French actor until the end.
